Wegovy (Semaglutide)
Form: Wegovy / Semaglutide is a subcutaneous injection that is available in 5 strengths in a FlexTouch pen. 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg, and 2.4mg.
Mode of action:
- Semaglutide is 94% similar to the native GLP-1 hormone that is released in response to food intake and acts as a physiological regulator of appetite.
- It therefore acts as a GLP-1 receptor agonist and regulates appetite and calorie intake.
- It affects areas of the brain that control homeostatic as well as hedonistic regulation of food intake.
- Studies have shown Semaglutide stimulates insulin secretion and lowers glucagon secretion when blood glucose is high, therefore lowering blood glucose.
Dose: Once weekly injection. Titration beginning at 0.25mg for weeks 1-4, progressing in 4-weekly intervals up to a 2.4mg weekly maintenance dose.
Side effects include: Headache, fatigue, and transient gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal pain.
