Standard 3 relates to providing effective communication to deliver person-centred care to help patients feel involved in decisions about their health, safety and wellbeing. It involves more than just imparting information, pharmacy professionals need to use a combination of body language, tone of voice and words to provide effective communication.

Below are examples of attitudes and behaviours needed to achieve this standard:

  • Adapting their communication to meet the needs of the person they are communicating with
  • Overcoming barriers to communication
  • Asking questions and listen carefully to the responses, to understand the person’s needs and come to a shared decision about the care they provide
  • Listening actively and responding to the information they receive in a timely manner
  • Checking the person has understood the information they have been given
  • Communicating effectively with others involved in the care of the person

Standard 6 relates to behaving in a professionally appropriate manner at all times to instill trust and confidence in pharmacy by members of the public.

Below are examples of attitudes and behaviours needed to achieve this standard:

  • Being polite and considerate
  • Being trustworthy and acting with honesty and integrity
  • Showing empathy and compassion
  • Treating people with respect and safeguarding their dignity
  • Maintaining appropriate personal and professional boundaries with the people they provide care to and with others

Standard 9 relates to taking responsibility for actions and leading by example, regardless of role

Below are examples of attitudes and behaviours needed to achieve this standard:

  • Taking responsibility for their practice and demonstrating leadership to the people they work withAssessing the risks in the care they provide and do everything they can to keep these risks as low as possible
  • Contributing to the education, training and development of the team or of others
  • Delegating tasks only to people who are competent and appropriately trained or are in training, and exercise proper oversight
  • Not abusing their position or set out to influence others to abuse theirs
  • Leading by example, in particular to those who are working towards registration as a pharmacy professional
