The two most common medications for the management of hair loss are minoxidil (Regaine) and finasteride (Propecia).
Minoxidil
The exact way that minoxidil works is not entirely known – it appears to widen the hair follicle, causing a thicker strand of hair to grow and prolonging the anagen phase, resulting in longer hair and a higher number of hair strands.
Finasteride
Finasteride is the only prescription only medication licensed for MPB in the UK. More details on how it works can be found in this module
Alternative options include
Transplant Surgery
Involves removing hair follicles from the back of the head where they are resistant to DHT and placing them on the scalp.
Laser combs1
Limited evidence currently available but It is claimed these devices promote hair growth by using concentrated light that stimulates hair follicles..
Wigs and hair piece
Doesn’t address the underlying cause but provides a means to disguise hair loss.
