Insect Repellents7

The Advisory Committee on Malaria Prevention (ACMP) recommends Deet based repellents with concentration over 20%

  • Suitable for > 2months of age
  • No evidence of higher risk using 50% DEET
  • 50% has the longest duration of action

Advice:

  • Apply to exposed skin only
  • Apply DEET after sun cream
  • As may reduce sun cream SPF use higher SPF
  • Avoid contact with plastics

If DEET is not suitable, alternative repellents are recommended - icaridin (picaridin), lemon eucalyptus (p-methane 3,8 diol), IR3535, but few are as effective.

Oil of citronella is NOT RECOMMENDED by ACMP.
