The choice of antimalarial should be appropriate for the destination and current UK guidelines, taking into account:

  1. Risk of exposure to infected bites
  2. Patient specific factors i.e. pre-existing medical conditions/other medicines being taken/potential compliance to regime

Drug regimes currently recommended7 for malaria prophylaxis:  

  • Chloroquine
  • Chloroquine with Proguanil
  • Atovaquone with Proguanil
  • Doxycycline
  • Mefloquine

Antimalarials do not prevent the infection, but kills the parasite in the blood cells (suppressive prophylaxis) or liver cells (causal prophylaxis).
