The body is protected by the immune system in two ways being Innate or Adaptive immunity

Innate (non specific) Immunity

The defence is naturally present so provides immediate protection. It helps to protect against any foreign antigen and so is non-specific 

  • Physical Defences - Stop infections before it enters the body
    • Skin
    • Mucous membranes
    • Saliva
    • Stomach acid
    • Flushed out via urine / tears
  • Bloodbourne Defences
    • Consists of different white cells including neutrophils , basophils , macrocytes
    • Responsible for swallowing, killing and digesting invading microbes. (phagocytosis).
