When counselling your customers on treatment options its important they know what they should do but also what they should not do as it could make the chickenpox worse or encourages transmission.
Dos and don'ts include:
Do
- ✔ Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration
- ✔ Take paracetamol to help with pain
- ✔ Cut your child’s fingernails and put socks on their hands at night to stop scratching
- ✔ Use cooling creams or gels
- ✔ Use antihistamine medicine
- ✔ Bath in cool water and pat skin dry don’t rub
- ✔ Dress in loose clothing
Don’t
- ✘ Do not use ibuprofen unless advised to do so by a doctor, as it may cause serious skin infections
- ✘ Do not give aspirin to children under 16
- ✘ Do not go near new-born babies, people who are pregnant and people with a weakened immune system, as chickenpox can be dangerous to them
- ✘ Do not scratch the spots, this can cause scarring
