Managing Menopause Conversations
Community pharmacies are in a unique position to support women at various stages of their menopause journey. By initiating open and empathetic conversations, colleagues can provide valuable information and guidance tailored to each individual's needs.
Whether a woman is just beginning to experience symptoms, is in the midst of menopause, or is navigating post-menopausal health, pharmacies can offer personalised advice and support.
Community pharmacy should be prepared for a variety of conversations regarding menopause. Women may be at different stages in their menopause experience so getting the conversation right is key. It is important that we are not dismissive and that we provide reassurance with constructive advice and support.
When to refer patients to other healthcare professionals.
Women may not actively be seeking help for menopause but may mention their symptoms in passing. In this case the NICE guideline NG23 provides comprehensive recommendations on the information to include in this conversation. Any patient that presents with the following should be referred to a healthcare professional such as a GP.- Suspected premature (before age 40) or early menopause (before age 45)
- Unexplained vaginal bleeding
- Significant upset with vasomotor symptoms
- Suspected depression
- Significant urogenital symptoms
Community pharmacies are perfectly placed to have conversations regarding HRT prescriptons. Patients may ask questions directly or we could initiate the conversation by asking them how they are finding the treatment.
