Now we’ve discussed tools to help yourself develop, we need to look at how you will develop your teams.
What makes a good team and what makes them work well?
Great teamwork doesn’t just happen overnight and new teams often don’t perform well when it first comes together. Forming a team takes time and team members often go through recognisable stages as they change from being a collection of strangers to a united group with a common goal.
Bruce Tuckmans model describes these 4 stages as Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing:
As a manager your role is about encouraging the team to achieve even more. They need little direction to do what they need to do at this stage, but to move them forward it is about encouraging new ideas and thinking.
