What are your barriers to delegation?
The truth is there are many barriers to delegation. Sometimes people feel it takes too long to delegate, people don’t do the job right in the end or sometimes we just like doing a job and hence don’t want to delegate it. Delegation is a learning process for our staff and for us as managers and it is about ensuring we are delegating to the right person and with the right level of support.
So there's a few things there that impact you to justify in your mind why you may be doing tasks that could easily be delegated, but the consequences could have a real impact on:
- YOU - your stress levels will hit the roof causing you to become overloaded and overwhelmend.
- Your team - they won't learn to develop or learn new skills and will feel undervalued and as a consequence leave the business. Your team are an important asset to keeping your pharmacy alive and they also play a key role in retaining customer loyalty.
- Trust - from above, your team won't feel trusted or valued.
- Survival - if you don't make it into work one day/week/long term, ask yourself, can your pharmacy survive? Even worse, tasks won't get completed in your absence so can have a knock on effect on other things.
Always remember that delegating a task doesn’t abdicate you from responsibility. Always stay in the loop and offer support.
