Q. I have a prescription for ‘K-Y Jelly 50g’ - can I dispense it?

A. No, this item is not allowed on an NHS prescription.

There have been changes to the K-Y Jelly range with the addition of two new pack sizes and the discontinuation of one pack size.

K-Y Jelly is classified as a medical device and so the product and pack size must be listed in the Drug Tariff in order to be dispensed.

The range is now divided into sterile and non–sterile products.

Two new pack sizes of 50g and 75g are available. These products are described as non-sterile and are not listed in the Drug Tariff. These two products therefore cannot be prescribed.

The traditional pack sizes of 42g and 82g are sterile and are listed in the Drug Tariff. However, the manufacturer has discontinued the 42g pack size.

This means that the only available pack size which is allowed on NHS prescription is the 82g sterile pack.

We would advise that prescriptions for the 50g and 75g non-sterile pack sizes be returned to the prescriber for amendment.

Prescriptions for a sterile 42g pack could be fulfilled with the 82g tube, although we cannot guarantee payment – it would be prudent, for the time-being, to also get these prescriptions amended to ensure prompt and accurate reimbursement.

In either case there would be no need to delay the supply of the product to the patient.
