When trying to spot the signs of sepsis during your conversations, use WWHAM questions as set out below:
- WHO €“ Sepsis can affect anyone but is commonly seen in the very young or very old, those who have recently had surgery or an injury or those with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes.
- WHAT €“ What are the symptoms? Are there any early signs of sepsis present? What about the later red flag symptoms?
- HOW €“ How long have they had the symptoms for? Sepsis can develop drastically fast. If red flag symptoms are present, then this is a medical emergency.
- ACTION €“ Have they already seen a doctor? Have they been given a timeline of when to return to the doctor if symptoms haven't improved? If not, advise to seek further advice if their condition doesn't improve significantly or worsens.
- MEDICATION €“ What medication is being taken? Does the person take any other medication which may indicate sepsis i.e. medicines that weaken the immune system?
