module menu icon Gingivitis (Gum Disease)

This condition is most common in adults and is the main cause for tooth loss in the over 40s. It is estimated that approximately half of the adult population in the UK has some degree of gum disease. If gingivitis is left untreated it can develop in to a more sereve condition called periodontitis which affects the tissues that support the teeth.

Healthy gums hold the teeth firmly in place appear pink and don’t bleed when they are brushed. The initial symptoms of gum disease are:

  • Red and swollen gums.
  • Bleeding gums after brushing or flossing.

If gum disease develops in to periodontitis the following symptoms may appear:

  • A bad taste in the mouth.
  • Loose or wobbly teeth.
  • Abscesses of the gum (collection of pus that develops under the gums or teeth).

The best ways to treat and prevent gingivitis is to adopt a good oral care routine as previously discussed
