For people with dementia:
- Many tasks, no matter how simple - can quickly become frustrating
- What might seem logical to you, may seem very confusing to someone with dementia
A survey conducted by the Alzheimer’s Society asked people with dementia why they stopped going out - 69% said the main reason was lack of confidence1. Dementia can cause isolation, therefore by understanding the condition, how you can support and encourage patients it will help make your pharmacy a safe and welcoming environment.
It is important patients with dementia and their carers maintain contact with the community and feel valued and understood.
Increasing awareness of the condition amongst colleagues, patients and friends can also help to remove any social stigma associated with dementia.
