If a patient is in the early stages of dementia it is recommended that someone in the pharmacy discusses with the patient how they wish to be supported as their condition progresses. Consent to discuss the patient’s condition with a partner or carer should be sought where appropriate.
Remember, when discussing lifestyle or medication details with carers, the principles of patient confidentiality apply. The patient should provide informed consent for any information to be discussed with their family or carer.
It’s not just about the patient; dementia affects everyone around them particularly their partners or full time carers. Often these people are under considerable stress and need support; you can provide that just by simply being a friendly ear and someone to talk to. The pharmacy can provide support to carers through advice, reassurance and practical things such as delivery services.
Each person with dementia is different so if they are a regular patient try to understand their symptoms and how it affects them. Ideally speak to the patient but if they find it difficult to communicate speak to their partner or carer who can give you an insight into their condition.
At all times it is essential follow the four principles of person-centred care, which we will look at on the next page.
