Mastitis is a condition that is common in breast-feeding women and approximately one in ten are affected. It causes the breast tissue to become inflamed and painful and usually only affects one breast. There are two types:-

  • Non-infectious - Usually caused when milk does not drain from the breast tissue due to a blocked milk duct or a problem breast-feeding. If left untreated this can lead to infectious mastitis
  • Infectious - Is caused by bacteria which gets into the milk ducts through a cracked or sore nipple and causes an infection

Symptoms of Mastitis

An area of the breast becomes hard, red, swollen and painful with a burning sensation and it often starts around the nipple. Mothers can also develop a high temperature and feel unwell.

If a mother has been diagnosed you can recommend painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen to help reduce pain and fever.

REMEMBER!

If a mother presents with any of the above symptoms you should refer them to their GP or health visitor for a diagnosis. It is important to advise a mother to continue to breastfeed or express milk using the affected breast and to massage the breast to release blockages.
