It is not always possible for a mother to breast-feed; either for physical or psychological reasons or both. Whatever the mothers choice it should be supported by health care staff.
Infant formula is the alternative to breast-feeding, which is made from treated cow's milk to make it suitable for babies. Infant formula contains two proteins, whey and casein.
Formula can come in two formats, ready to feed and powdered formula.
Newborn babies are recommended to have first infant formula which is why based and therefore easier to digest. A baby can remain on this formula or be transferred on to follow-on milk as they progress to eating solid foods at around 6 months old up until they are one years old. Children can drink whole cows milk from the age of one years old.
Like breast-feeding there are some common questions that mothers have by they should always be referred to their health visitor for advice.
