A sprain is the stretching or tearing of a ligament, and a strain is the stretching or tearing of a muscle or tendon. They are common injuries which most can be treated at home.
A strain or sprain can be defined by:-
- Pain, tenderness or weakness
- Swollen or bruised around the painful area
- Unable to put weight on the injury or use it normally
- Muscle spasms or cramps
A sprain or strain can take up to 8 weeks to heal fully. After 2 weeks, they are likely to feel better but strenuous exercise should be avoided for up to 8 weeks to prevent any further damage. A severe sprain or strain could take months to fully heal.
