module menu icon Treatment of Vomiting

Usually vomiting should get better on its own within a few days and is self-treatable.

Patients should be advised to:-

  • Use an oral re-hydration solution to help keep them hydrated.
  • Take paracetamol to reduce any pain or fever
  • Drink lots of fluid to avoid dehydration
  • Stay at home and get plenty of rest
  • Return to normal eating as soon as they feel able

Sickness can spread easily to others and patients are at their most infectious from when symptoms start until 2 days after they have passed. They should avoid school or work until their symptoms have stopped for 2 days.

To help prevent the infection spreading patients should:-

  • Wash their hands with soap and water frequently
  • Washing dirty clothing and bedding separately on a hot wash
  • Clean toilet seats, flush handles, taps, surfaces and door handles daily
  • Don't prepare food for others
  • Don't share towels, flannels, cutlery and utensils
