Prevention of nappy rash is key and some advice to give to patients will include:-
- Change wet or dirty nappies as soon as possible
- Clean the whole area thoroughly, wiping from front to back, with water or fragrance free wipes
- Bathe the child daily and dry the nappy area thoroughly
- Provide the child with some nappy free time so that the skin can be aired
- Avoid using soap, bubble baths and lotions
- Avoid using talc as it may irritate the skin
If a nappy rash occurs consider recommending a barrier cream to protect the skin from moisture. For more severe nappy rash you would need to refer them to the pharmacist who may recommend an anti-fungal cream or refer them on to their GP.
Nappy rash should improve within 3 days however if the rash doesn't get any better then you will need to refer on to their health visitor or GP.
