Most babies will experience nappy rash at some stage. It is less common in newborns but it can develop in any child that wears nappies.

It is caused by a number of factors including:-

  • Skin being in contact with urine or stools for a long time
  • The nappy rubbing against the skin
  • Irritation from soaps or detergents
  • Alcohol based baby wipes
  • The child having taken a course of antibiotics
  • Nappies not being changed frequently or the area not cleaned effectively in between nappies.

When nappy rash occurs it can look red in patches or cover the whole area. The skin feel hot to touch and look sore. There may also be some spots or blisters in the affected area.
