The majority of insect bites are not serious and usually get better within a few days, however they can occasionally become infected.

An insect bite can be a from a wide variety of bugs from bees, horseflies, to spiders and midges.

Bites will usually cause the skin to swell to a lump, and will be red in colour. This can be painful and itchy, however symptoms should stop within a week.

Occasionally patients may have a severe allergic reaction which can cause dizziness, breathing difficulties and a swollen mouth/face. Patients will need to seek urgent attention in this case.

To help prevent insect bites patients can:-

  • Use an insect repellent containing 50% DEET
  • Cover any exposed skin
  • Cover food and drink nearby to deter them from the smell
