Dandruff is a common skin condition that causes flakes of skin to appear on the scalp and in the hair. Dandruff can appear at any age and can be treated, but often when treatment stops the condition can come back.
The scalp may feel dry and itchy and in some cases it may lead to soreness if the skin is broken.
Dandruff isn't contagious or harmful but in can look unpleasant and be hard to get rid of. It can also make the patient self-conscious.
Some aggravating factors include hair dyes, perms and not rinsing shampoo out properly.
Severe dandruff can be caused by seborrheic dermatitis.
