module menu icon Treatment for Dandruff

The main way to treat dandruff is to use an anti-dandruff shampoo and there are numerous types available to buy.

Ideally the shampoo should include one of the below ingredients:-

  • Zinc pyrithione
  • Selenium sulphide
  • Salicylic acid
  • Coal tar
  • Ketoconazole

Ideally when using these shampoos you should leave them on the hair for 3-5 minutes and rise them thoroughly.

Patients may need to try different shampoos to find the best one that works for them. It is important to remember that they will need to continue the use shampoo otherwise the dandruff may return.

Excessive blow drying of the hair can dry the skin out, leading to dandruff.

If required a GP may need to prescribe stronger treatments.
