People with a sedentary lifestyle have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared with people who are physically active, therefore regular moderate exercise should be encouraged; ideally 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least five times a week. This depends on age, general health and fitness and how active the patient has been in the past. Government guidelines recommend getting at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. This could be vigorous gardening or housework. Patients should be advised to do some exercise every day. Exercise has many benefits and any amount is better than none. Even just a few minutes a day can improve general health and well-being.

Here are a few benefits of regular exercise that could be considered:

  • Exercise burns up extra calories to help maintain and control weight
  • Exercise can reduce blood glucose levels by increasing the amount of glucose used by the muscles
  • Regular work-outs may help to reduce your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity
  • Staying active keeps joints, tendons and ligaments flexible, allowing you to move more easily and avoid injury
  • Regular exercise helps to strengthen the heart and lungs
  • Keeping fit can help to reduce some of the effects of ageing
  • Regular work outs contribute to your mental well-being and boost your mood
  • Working out is a great way to help relieve stress and anxiety
  • People who work out regularly have more energy and endurance for everyday life
