There are some key questions to be asked during each travel consultation to ensure that the advice provided is accurate and specific. The consultation should include questions that are both traveller and destination specific:
Whilst this list seems quite long, simply asking the patient to describe their travel plans will answer many of these questions in one conversation.
When conducting a risk assessment it is important to remember that the purpose is to enable the traveller to minimise risk and also maximise enjoyment, it should not instil fear or deter the person from travelling.
It is strongly recommended that anyone conducting a travel risk assessment records the patient's responses to the questions, as these responses will form the basis of any clinical recommendation.
A travel risk assessment form is available for download from NumarkNet.
There is also a more in depth, and free downloadable form from the
Travel Health Pro Risk Assessment website.
This module will detail the questions that should be included within a travel risk assessment, the reasons why this information is important and suitable advice that could be provided.
