module menu icon Budget for travel

Travellers with a restricted budget are more likely to use the cheapest options for all basic services such as cheaper hotels or guest houses. This standard of accommodation may not provide prophylactic measures such as impregnated bed nets, shutters or insect burners/coils. They are also more likely to eat from road side food vendors which may increase their risk of food related illnesses.

Limited travel budget also increases the likelihood of the traveller using public transport where they will mix more closely with the local population.

Travellers on a low budget who become ill whilst abroad are also less likely to be able to afford medical assistance; this is a good reason for taking adequate medical insurance before travel and also taking advice on bite avoidance, water and food hygiene.
