Patients who are staying in five star luxury hotels with the associated facilities of air conditioning, clean running water and high class restaurants will be exposed to a lower level of risk than patients who are back packing through tropical jungles and sleeping in a tent with limited access to clean water or food preparation facilities.

It is important that travellers staying in more luxurious accommodation do not become complacent towards the use of prophylactic measures including insect repellents, impregnated bed nets and other bite avoidance measures.

Those travelling abroad for extended periods are advised to check their accommodation and investigate the immediate vicinity for potential mosquito breeding sites such as stagnant pools and puddles.
