Where the best interests meeting identifies that covert administration is in the best interests of the patient a management plan should be agreed.
This plan will involve:
- A medication review by the GP to identify medicines considered essential to the patient's quality of life and general health.
- A medication review by the pharmacist to confirm the most appropriate and safest method of covert administration.
- Clear and comprehensive documentation of the best interest meeting including the assessment of mental incapacity and the names of everyone involved in the meeting.
- A plan to ensure the need for continued covert administration is regularly reviewed.
The British Medical Association (BMA) and the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) also provide guidance for their members on covert administration of medication.
