Figure 2: Eczema in an infant

NICE have issued guidance to healthcare professionals on the diagnosis and management of CMPA: Diagnosis and Assessment of Food Allergy in Children and Young People in Primary Care and Community Settings. A useful summary document is the Clinical Knowledge Summary of cow's milk protein allergy in children.

NICE recommends that healthcare professionals should consider food allergy in a child who shows one or more of the listed symptoms, particularly if persistent or involving different organ systems. Alternatively, food allergy should be considered where a child has had treatment for atopic eczema, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease or chronic gastrointestinal symptoms that have not responded adequately to treatment.

If a pharmacist suspects an undiagnosed food allergy they should refer the infant to their GP.
