In March 2019 Public Health England published the document ‘The Pharmacy Offer for Sexual Health, Reproductive Health and HIV A resource for commissioners and providers’ , in which it recognising the important role that community pharmacy has supporting the sexual health of their local communities due to several reasons, including:
- Strong links to local diverse communities
- The professional has the trust and support of the public
- Provides easy access as conveniently located in heart of communities
- Offers access to anonymous advice from a healthcare professional
- Accessible to all, especially deprived communities who may not access other conventional NHS services.
Pharmacy teams should "make every conversation count" (MECC), using every opportunity within their everyday practice, to engage in conversations to promote better sexual health eg. when selling condoms or supplying emergency contraception.
And have access to contact details for local services for signposting when required.
