module menu icon Management of Diabetes During Ramadan

Sharia law allows individuals with certain illnesses to be excused from fasting during Ramadan and offer fidyah instead, but many Muslims despite being in this category, prefer not to miss the fasts during Ramadan.

For some people there may be tension between their own desire to fast and that of their families, with feelings of guilt or embarrassment for not fasting, or fasting despite objections from their families.

Some alter their regimen to try and manage their diabetes without telling their GP, as fear being told not to fast.

Whatever choice is made, it should be respected and non-judgemental support given to ensure patients remains healthy during Ramadan. If not managed well, fasting for people with diabetes can be dangerous.
