Glycogenesis and Glycogenolysis

In its normal state the body secretes insulin as glucose levels increase after eating triggering the storage of glucose in the liver and muscles as glycogen (glycogenesis). As blood glucose levels drop insulin secretion is inhibited and glucagon released triggering the breakdown of the stored glycogen releasing glucose (glycogenolysis).
