COPD patients may have a number of issues when eating and drinking and there are several practical tips you can provide.

Patients who are short of breath and struggling to eat large amounts should choose softer, moist foods and aim to eat smaller amounts, 6 times a day

Patients with a dry mouth (which may be caused by medication), may find it difficult to chew and swallow foods. They should choose softer, moist foods. They can also suck fruit sweets or ice cubes made with fruit juice or chew sugar free gum. If the problem continues pastilles or saliva spray can be prescribed

Patients with changes in taste (often a consequence of a dry mouth) resulting in loss of appetite should be advised that after using a steroid inhaler, they should rinse their mouth and gargle with water to prevent oral thrush. They should also ensure good dental hygiene. Patients should be encourages to try sharp, spicy or sugary foods as they have a stronger taste and experiment with different seasonings and sauces.
