Viral meningitis is the most common form of meningitis but also the least serious type 3,4

The enterovirus is the most common cause, being prevalent in the UK during summer and autumn months


•    Viral spread is mainly by hand to mouth transmission.
•    Most common in babies and young children
•    No specific treatment for most cases 
–    Most infections produce no symptoms, or mild symptoms such as sore throats, colds and flu-like illnesses. 
–    Some may cause stomach upsets and diarrhoea.
–    Patients  are hydrated with fluids, given painkillers and  rested in order to allow recovery
•    Rarely life threatening 
–    but can still leave people with long-lasting after effects such as headaches, fatigue and memory problems
