Complications
- Malaria is a serious illness and can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated quickly
- Pregnant women, young children and the elderly are at particular risk
- Malaria increases the risk of developing complications in pregnancy - pregnant women are advised to avoid travelling to countries with malaria.
- The P.falciparum parasite causes the most severe form of malaria and most deaths.
- Complications can occur within hours or days of first symptoms if untreated
