Vaniqa: How it works
Eflornithine (the active ingredient in Vaniqa) irreversibly inhibits ornithine decarboxylase, an enzyme involved in the production of the hair shaft by the hair follicle. By blocking this substance the hair follicle is unable to generate hair.
As it only slows down the growth of unwanted hair (not remove it) – having another method for hair removal such as plucking or shaving may need to be continued while using Vaniqa cream.
During usage the cream reduces the rate of hair growth, however when treatment is stopped the enzyme is free to stimulate hair growth and the condition may re-appear.
In clinical trials, improvement of facial hair was seen in 70% of women4.
