NICE definition6:

Antimicrobial stewardship is defined as 'an organisational or healthcare‑system‑wide approach to promoting and monitoring judicious use of antimicrobials to preserve their future effectiveness'

Organisations include all commissioners, service providers (Hospitals, GPs, out-of-hours services, dentists and social enterprises) and health and social care practitioners – including but not limited to case managers, care co-ordinators, GPs, hospital doctors, microbiologists, pharmacists, nurses and social workers.

Health and social care practitioners have an important role in antimicrobial stewardship by  supporting the implementation of local antimicrobial guidelines.
