NICE definition6:
Antimicrobial stewardship is defined as 'an organisational or healthcare€‘system€‘wide approach to promoting and monitoring judicious use of antimicrobials to preserve their future effectiveness'
Organisations include all commissioners, service providers (Hospitals, GPs, out-of-hours services, dentists and social enterprises) and health and social care practitioners – including but not limited to case managers, care co-ordinators, GPs, hospital doctors, microbiologists, pharmacists, nurses and social workers.
Health and social care practitioners have an important role in antimicrobial stewardship by supporting the implementation of local antimicrobial guidelines.
