Influenza is spread by droplets, aerosol, or through direct contact with respiratory secretions of someone with the infection. When infected people cough, sneeze or talk, virus-containing droplets are propelled into the air. These droplets are then inhaled through the mouth and nose of other individuals or less frequently, individuals touch surfaces covered in the droplets and then touch their own eyes, nose and mouth.
Influenza spreads rapidly especially in closed communities such as hopsitals or care homes.
