Anaphylaxis
Anaphylaxis is a rare but serious allergic reaction - about 1 in a million vaccine doses.
It is life-threatening, with a rapid onset, and needs immediate action.
Allergens given intramuscularly (like vaccines) can trigger faster symptoms than allergens from food or medciation.
Signs of Anaphylaxis
Symptoms usually appear suddenly and progress quickly.
Airway, Breathing, Circulation (ABC) Issues
- Breathing or swallowing difficulty
- Wheezing, chest tightness
- Fast pulse, low blood pressure, dizziness or collapse
Skin or Mucosal Changes (Common but do not confirm anaphylaxis)
- Flushing
- Hives (urticaria)
- Swelling (angioedema), especially the face or lips
When a patient is showing signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, a quick response is required and emergency adrenaline will need to be administered.
