The following are some ideas of how to implement a flu vaccination service during the COVID-19 pandemic to minimise viral transmission risk.
- Encourage customers to wear face coverings where possible, posters in pharmacy window.
- Signage in the window to prevent customers attending with COVID symptoms or if they are self-isolating.
- Customers should comply with hand hygiene, having hand gel within the pharmacy for customers to use.
- When booking customer appointments, allow sufficient time between customers to clean consultation room or pharmacy.
- Ensure the consultation room has been arranged to try and maintain social distancing and minimise contact time with customers.
- Can the customer leave the pharmacy after the vaccination, check the PGD providers requirements post-vaccination.
The following are some suggested ideas that may be used to deliver the flu vaccination service during 2020/21.
The PSNC put forward some suggestions to NHSE&I, to help pharmacies deliver the flu vaccination service more safely and have not yet been confirmed by NHSE&I and may never be approved, but may give some suggestions on how to deliver the service to as many people as possible to achieve herd immunity:
- Domiciliary vaccinations for shielded patients to remain safe.
- “Drive-thru” vaccines where vaccines will be administered to customers sitting in their cars to maintain patient safety.
- Asking customers to wait in cars rather than in the pharmacy.
- Delivering flu vaccinations outside of the consultation room which supports better social distancing.
- Off-site vaccinations, in larger environments which better support social distancing.
- Removal of the need to gain signed consent to flu vaccination and have a verbal consent which is recorded.
