Different AEDs vary considerably in their physicochemical properties, side-effects and interaction profile. These factors influence the drug's susceptibility to formulation variations and hence differences in bioavailability between products. The potential risks to the patient associated with switching between different manufacturer's products are significant but will depend on the AED itself. There is therefore scope to minimise these risks by considering each patient and each AED and taking action to maintain continuity of supply where necessary.
