module menu icon Treating allergies

The most effective treatment is trying to avoid all contact with the allergen but in some cases this is not practical. Each allergy will have specific treatments but most of them will fall in to one of the following
categories:

• Antihistamines to block the production of histamine during a reaction.
• Steroid nasal sprays to reduce inflammation.
• Cromoglycate eye drops to reduce itchiness and redness.
• Decongestants which help to relieve the nasal congestion.
• Leukotiene receptor antagonists, which are found in prescription medicines for asthma, block the effects of the leukotiene which is released during an allergic reaction and causes inflammation of the airways.
• Immunotherapy also known as hyposensitisation gradually introduces more and more of the allergen into the body to reduce the sensitivity e.g. peanut allergy.
