Healthcare’s Commitment to Climate
The NHS has made a commitment to the climate crisis by creating a route to net zero emissions called NHS Net Zero. The chart below shows how the NHS currently generates 5% of total carbon emissions in the UK.
(elfh All Our Health Climate Change)
NHS Net Zero has two targets
- For emissions the NHS controls directly, 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2032 and 100% reduction by 2040
- For emissions the NHS can influence, 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2039 and 100% reduction by 2045
A more sustainable healthcare system will:
- Help prevent illness
- Give greater control to patients in managing their health
- Be leaner in service design and delivery
- Use the lowest carbon technologies
