When we look at personality styles there are 4 main types. Driver, Expressive, Amiable and Analyst. Each of these personalities works and communicates in different ways.
As managers we need to be able to identify these types within our teams and there are some characteristics which can help us, but we should also understand our own style.

Key characteristics
- Loves to have fun, a social specialist and as the name suggests, expressive in their behaviour.
- Is energised and very motivated and generates new ideas.
- Wants to be included in teams, projects and discussions.
Strengths
- Is very outgoing and has a strong personality and love to be around people.
- They are animated and lively when they speak to tell their stories.
- Ambitious, charismatic, and persuasive.
- Is very quick and assertive.
Weaknesses
- Can be disorganised, loud and incredibly talkative.
- Expressive personality types do get impatient and will look for distractions.
- Can tend to exaggerate situations and leave out details.
Key characteristics
- Radiate confidence and naturally gravitate towards leadership positions.
- They are drawn towards results and move fast but are not detail orientated.
- Great at seeing the bigger picture and know how they are going to get to where they need to get to, but don’t always take the steps needed to get there.
Strengths
- Very determined and independent.
- Productive and get things done.
- Decisive and would rather make a bad decision than no decision at all.
Weaknesses
- They don’t like to admit they are wrong.
- Drivers can be insensitive, unsympathetic and harsh.
- Tend to rush decisions without thinking things through or understanding the impact or consequences.
Key characteristics
- Often are pleasant, patient and well balanced people.
- Don’t want to offend anyone.
- Display kind and sympathetic behaviours.
Strengths
- Loyal, reliable and friendly so can work in harmony and make decisions together.
- Has a caring nature and doesn’t like conflict so easy to get along with.
- Are quick to reach a decision.
Weaknesses
- Calm and sensitive to feelings of others but can come across unclear.
- Amiable personality types can be stubborn and selfish.
Key characteristics
- Analytical personality types tend to be orderly and organised and set very high standards of performance in personal and professional life.
- Pays very close attention to detail and great at problem solving.
- Depend on facts and numbers.
Strengths
- Want things done right the first time – even down to the finer detail!
- Known for being a perfectionist and hates making errors.
- Is neat and tidy and likes to be organised and have a structured approach to work.
Weaknesses
- Can be critical and negative.
- Can be indecisive and over analyse everything.
- Gets frustrated if people don’t see the right answer as clearly as they do.
You may have more than one personality type which scores highly, this just means you are more likely to fluctuate between them depending on the situation.
Now, if you don't belong to any one group, don't worry. Many of us don't fit squarely in one type or another. However, we do have one dominant personality style that we use day to day and being able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of your specific style will help you better understand how you deal with your team and your customers!
