How do you choose who to delegate to?
Having completed the activity sheet earlier, we can conclude that:
- Everyone will have different opinions on what can and can’t be delegated
- The key thing is to remember that by choosing who to delegate to will really depend on the skills and knowledge of the team around you. Let's have a look at the Skill vs. Will matrix.
If you were asked to think about who you are likely to delegate to, it's likely one or two people will come straight to your mind, right?
It is important to not always delegate to the same people and to fully utilise your resource and develop/motivate your team. If you delegate too much to one person they will feel stressed and unhappy.
The matrix below will help to answer two simple but important questions:
- How much can that person rely on his or her skills to complete the task?
- How much does that person really want to complete the task?
It would be ideal to delegate your tasks to those with high skill and high will, however to develop people it can also be good to delegate to those with low skill/high will as these can be people willing to put a lot of effort in to achieve a good result.
