How does change make us feel?
We all experience change at some point in our life, be that in our personal or professional lives. What sort of emotions did you experience and can you note down how you felt from the beginning, middle and the end?
You may have previously heard of the change curve or transition curve. John Fisher's model was developed to highlight the journey employees typically go through during the process of change. These emotions are represented in a curve which shows the emotional highs and lows along the way:
As you can see, change is a curve and when it does happen it doesn't affect just your feelings but the people around you. At the different stages of the curve you may feel curious, bored, angry and in control or...on the other end of the spectrum, filled with feelings of being overwhelmed, excited, relieved or nervous until the change has been accepted by everyone.
HLP is embedding a new way of working in the workplace meaning you wil need to coach your team through this change. You can download our team introduction slide deck to help you have the conversation to become a HLP.
It’s important to remember that there is no time constraint on how long this journey normally takes – it depends on the circumstances and those involved. Some people may move very quickly through all stages, others may get caught in one stage for a long time.
