To Delegate or Not?
There are some tasks that should never be delegated, however busy you are or however much you dislike that task! Read through the following list, think about the task and if it is suitable to be delegated to one of your team members.
You will have identified that there are certain tasks that could not be delegated for reasons of confidentiality or importance, others are open for discussion depending on the content or specific factors of the task. For example, invoices may be straightforward supplier invoices that can easily be delegated, for other pharmacies the invoices may be complex and related to personnel costs which probably shouldn't be delegated.
The following tasks should definitely not be delegated:-
- Coaching a team member
- Conducting annual appraisals
- Investigating staff absence issues with the member of staff concerned
- Planning business aims for next 6 months
- Learning about new legislation on equality (but it may be beneficial to involve others)
- Talking to a staff member about their request for compassionate leave
- Thanking staff for staying late in an emergency
There are many reasons why they can't be delegated, they may be confidential matters, the task is too important, delegating may devalue the task or they may be a pivotal part of your role.
