The GROW Model

We have already looked at the skills requires to be a good coach, we now need to take a look at how to coach people.

There is a framework used for coaching which is called the GROW model.

Goal - What do you want to achieve? What does the individual want to focus on in the conversation or what is the goal of the task?

Reality - Where are you now? (What is happening right now?) To help the individual examine and assess all the factors relating to the current situation in relation to the task/goal being discussed. It's about listening to see if the person being coached is taking all aspects of the situation confronting them into account.

Options - What could you possibly do to achieve the goal? Help the individual being coached to explore all available options. Encouraging them to think broadly but also to make choices about what is realistically possible.

Will - What will you do?

These four questions help to keep a foundation but most coaching sessions require us to use more questions for each area.
