Good practice for protecting data

Below are some steps you can take to limit the risks and help protect data:

  • Lock devices, storage media and documents when not in use to prevent unauthorised access.
  • Use secure passwords. Choose passwords that cannot be easily guessed and make sure you keep them secure. Do not write them down and leave lying around.
  • Avoid storing personal or confidential data on laptops, mobile devices and removable media as these can be easily lost or stolen.
  • Save and store personal and confidential data on secure servers for maximum protection or make sure they are encrypted - use passwords to lock documents to prevent authorised access.
  • Always dispose of data securely e.g. dispose of via secure waste bins or shredding.
  • Only open emails and attachments if you know the sender and are confident it is authentic.
  • Ensure you know who you are sending any information to and can be sure the location is secure i.e. is there a safe haven fax you can use?
